Many mistakenly believe that grim urban landscapes, technological advancements, and even the presence of implants in some individuals have already plunged us into a cyberpunk world. However, as practice shows, this is far from the truth.
The Origins and Essence of Cyberpunk
Research into the concept of cyberpunk reveals that its emergence and evolution are significantly more complex than they appear. Contrary to popular misconceptions, anime is neither its creator nor its “killer.” A genuine understanding of cyberpunk requires a deep dive into its history and philosophical underpinnings, which define it as something more than just an aesthetic of high technology and societal decay.
Why We Are Not Living in Cyberpunk, Despite Progress
Modern technological achievements often lead to the erroneous conclusion that the cyberpunk era has arrived. For instance, recent statements by the Bank of America Institute about the potential growth of humanoid robots to 3 billion by 2060 might reinforce this view. Mentions of Tesla’s Optimus robots supposedly serving drinks and cleaning homes, or smart algorithms automatically tallying purchases, create an illusion of a cyberpunk reality.

- “Smart” Stores: Systems purportedly using AI for item counting turned out to be hundreds of Indian operators manually processing purchase information.
These examples demonstrate that behind the facade of high-tech solutions often lies manual labor or limited capabilities, far from the utopian (or dystopian) vision of cyberpunk. Thus, despite rapid technological development, the real world does not yet meet the complex criteria defining true cyberpunk.
