Microsoft Edge Aligns with Chrome on Extension Platform Changes

Microsoft has announced its intention to phase out support for the Manifest V2 (MV2) extensions platform in its Microsoft Edge browser. This move mirrors Google’s strategy for Chrome and will result in users losing access to several popular extensions, including the widely used ad blocker uBlock Origin.

Phased Rollout of Changes

The cessation of MV2 support in Edge is scheduled to occur in stages, with a complete discontinuation expected by the end of 2026. This decision aims to standardize the approach to browser extensions across Chromium-based browsers, following Google Chrome’s earlier transition away from MV2. Consequently, the functionality of popular ad blockers like uBlock Origin, which rely on the older standard, will be affected.

Impact on Users and Developers

According to Microsoft, only 58 extensions in the Edge Add-On Store with “any meaningful usage” still utilize MV2. Among these, only three are ad blockers. This suggests that the majority of developers have already transitioned to the more modern Manifest V3 (MV3) standard, which offers enhanced security and performance features. Nevertheless, for users who depend on MV2 extensions, particularly uBlock Origin, these changes will necessitate finding alternative solutions or adapting to new browser usage conditions.
