GTA VI Generates Unprecedented Pre-Order Demand, Impacting GTA V Sales
Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, recently commented on the extraordinary success and anticipation surrounding Rockstar Games’ upcoming open-world crime epic, Grand Theft Auto VI. During a recent financial report, Zelnick described the level of pre-orders for GTA VI as “unprecedented,” indicating such immense demand that Take-Two cannot accurately forecast the game’s ultimate sales figures.
GTA V Sales Slow Amidst GTA VI Hype
The report for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 from Take-Two Interactive Software also revealed a notable slowdown in sales for existing titles, including Grand Theft Auto V. Over the past three months, less than a million copies of GTA V were sold. This decline is widely attributed to the overwhelming anticipation for the next installment in the highly popular series, as players look forward to GTA VI’s release.
Take-Two Endorses Diskless Release for GTA VI Physical Editions
Despite disappointment among many players regarding Rockstar Games’ decision to omit a physical disk from the boxed retail edition of Grand Theft Auto VI, Take-Two Interactive has fully endorsed this controversial move. Strauss Zelnick explicitly supported the decision, stating it “simply does not make sense” to include a disk given the current landscape of digital game distribution.
While the pre-order numbers for GTA VI are certainly impressive, I can’t help but wonder if the ‘unprecedented’ demand is also a reflection of aggressive marketing rather than pure organic excitement. The move to a diskless physical edition, while perhaps cost-effective for Take-Two, feels like a step backward for consumers who value ownership and aren’t always keen on relying solely on digital distribution, which can have its own hidden risks and limitations.
