Sony’s Prism Collection Brings Transparent Design Back to PS5
Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially unveiled its new Prism Collection line of PlayStation 5 accessories. This collection is designed to reintroduce “the iconic see-through trend of the late ’90s in a fresh, modern way” for its DualSense wireless controllers and accompanying console covers for the PS5, revealing some of their internal components.
Design Aesthetics and Color Options
The Prism Collection will launch with three vibrant color options:
| Accessory | Available Colors | Design Highlight |
|---|---|---|
| DualSense Controllers | Flare Orange, Emerald Green, Graphite Gray | Showcase key components and switches |
| PS5 Console Covers | Flare Orange, Emerald Green, Graphite Gray | Top halves reveal the console’s fan |
These new accessories feature transparent elements that provide a glimpse into their internal workings. For the console covers, the top halves reveal the console’s fan, while the controllers offer an even more striking view, allowing users to see all of their key components and switches.
Availability and Pre-orders
The Prism Collection is scheduled to launch on February 4, 2027. Enthusiasts will be able to place pre-orders starting on November 10. The accompanying press release did not specify whether the console covers will be compatible with all PS5 models.
Sony’s Prism Collection offers PlayStation 5 users a distinctive way to personalize their gaming setup, combining nostalgic design with modern aesthetics. By showcasing internal components, these transparent accessories appeal to those who appreciate the engineering behind their devices. This move allows gamers to make a unique statement while also celebrating the technology within. As manufacturers continue to innovate in design, transparent elements could become a notable trend in consumer electronics.
While the transparent design is a nostalgic nod, I do wonder about the practicality. Exposing internal components, even behind a clear shell, might highlight dust accumulation more, potentially making the console look dirtier faster. Also, will these transparent plastics be as durable or scratch-resistant as the opaque versions? It feels like a design choice that prioritizes aesthetics over long-term pristine appearance and robust protection.
