FTC Concludes Antitrust Case Against Zillow and Redfin

Real estate giants Zillow and Redfin have reached a definitive settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), bringing an end to the antitrust case concerning their alleged 2025 “partnership.” The FTC had contended that this collaboration violated antitrust laws by restricting competition in the rental listings market.

Settlement Details and Allegations

The FTC’s allegations centered on an arrangement where Zillow reportedly agreed to compensate Redfin for syndicating its rental listings. In return, Redfin was expected to terminate its existing advertising contracts and pledge not to compete with Zillow for multifamily rental listings. The regulator asserted that these actions fostered an anticompetitive environment, hindering the free development of rental property services.

A pivotal condition of the agreed-upon settlement mandates that Redfin re-enter the rental advertising business. This resolution is designed to restore competition and provide consumers with broader choices and enhanced services within the rental real estate sector.
