Regulatory Actions and Penalties

The Tagansky District Court of Moscow has imposed fines on major technology companies, Google and Telegram, for their failure to remove information deemed prohibited within the Russian Federation. These rulings are part of ongoing efforts to regulate digital content within the country.

Fines Levied Against Google

On August 18, Google was fined 3.8 million rubles. According to a TASS correspondent present at the court, the penalty was issued due to the company’s consistent refusal to delete specific content. This incident highlights the stringent stance of Russian judicial authorities towards international IT giants that do not comply with local legal standards.

Penalties for Telegram

The messaging service Telegram also faced similar sanctions. On August 19, the Tagansky District Court of Moscow imposed a fine of 3.8 million rubles for an analogous violation — its refusal to remove prohibited information. Notably, this marks the second such fine for Telegram within two days, indicating increased pressure on the platform.

The cumulative amount of fines imposed on Telegram since the beginning of the current year has already exceeded 100 million rubles, as reported by TASS. This trend reflects an escalation in the conflict between Russian regulators and the popular messaging service regarding content moderation issues.
