Apple Introduces New M6 and M5 Ultra Chips

Apple has announced a significant refresh for its desktop lineup, introducing updated Mac Mini and Mac Studio machines powered by the new M6 and M5 Ultra processors. These chips are designed to deliver enhanced performance and efficiency, particularly for demanding tasks like 3D rendering and running frontier AI models.

The M6 Chip: A New Era of Performance

The M6 chip marks Apple’s first 2nm processor, promising substantial improvements in performance and power efficiency. Apple states the M6 features more cores and advanced AI compute capabilities, making it a versatile powerhouse for a wide range of users.

Mac Mini: Compact Powerhouse Gets an Upgrade

The new generation of the Mac Mini will be available in two distinct models: one featuring the new M6 chip, and a higher-end option equipped with the M5 Pro chip, previously seen in this year’s MacBook Pro models. While maintaining the same tiny design and footprint as the 2024 M4/M4 Pro models, the updated Mac Mini starts at a higher price point of $899, representing a $300 increase over its predecessors.

Mac Studio: Unleashing Power with the M5 Ultra

Apple’s updated Mac Studio models now unify under a single chip generation, offering configurations with the existing M5 Max and the brand-new M5 Ultra. The company hails the M5 Ultra as its “most powerful chip ever,” specifically engineered for professional workloads demanding maximum computational power. This unification resolves the previous split where the Mac Studio awkwardly offered M4 Max and M3 Ultra options, with the latter, despite its older designation, being more powerful.

Availability and Preorders

Both the new Mac Mini and Mac Studio are currently available for preorder directly from Apple. Shipping for most configurations is scheduled to commence on September 22nd, 2026.
