Insights into AI Adoption in Software Development

A recent survey conducted by Habr and Cloud.ru has provided comprehensive insights into the integration of artificial intelligence in development processes. The study, based on 317 completed questionnaires, aimed to test five key hypotheses regarding the role of AI in the modern IT industry.

Key Findings from the Survey

One of the most significant correlations observed was that large companies implement end-to-end AI solutions 35% less frequently compared to smaller organizations. This suggests potential hurdles in scaling AI technologies within larger corporate structures.

The hypotheses explored during the survey included:

  • The transition of AI from personal to team-based and end-to-end implementation.
  • The dependence of AI adoption depth on company size and employee role.
  • The expansion of AI applications beyond mere code generation.
  • The correlation between engineering maturity and the effectiveness of AI integration.
  • The impact of AI on development speed versus code quality.

Furthermore, the survey revealed that 65% of respondents consider a future where “robots toil and humans are happy” to be utopian. Nearly half of the participants use AI to automate routine and repetitive tasks, though only one in nine believes this is where AI offers the greatest benefit. The majority of respondents feel that AI provides the most significant impact on development and testing processes. Conversely, one in seven participants does not use artificial intelligence tools at all.

Obstacles to AI Implementation

The research also addressed the reasons why pilot AI projects often fail to progress, while shadow AI usage thrives. The study examined factors hindering AI adoption and benefit realization, the stages at which pilot projects most frequently cease, and the obstacles to scaling successful cases across an entire organization.
