Microsoft Unveils Experimental Cloud Gaming Initiative
Microsoft has commenced trials for a new cloud gaming model, offering free access to titles supported by advertisements. This program, currently exclusive to Xbox Insiders, enables participants to stream games directly from their existing libraries.
Session Limitations and Ad Integration
The current phase of free cloud streaming incorporates several specific parameters:
- Access is restricted solely to games that users already own.
- Each streaming session is capped at a maximum duration of one hour.
- Advertisements are displayed exclusively before the commencement of gaming sessions.
- Watching ads is presented as an optional component, suggesting alternative methods for ad-free access may exist or be introduced.
This strategy of providing free, ad-supported game access aligns with models previously observed in services such as GeForce Now, indicating a broader industry trend.
I’ve been an Xbox Insider for a while and just tried this. The ad-supported cloud gaming is actually pretty smooth for the most part, especially for games I already own and just want a quick session on. The one-hour cap is a bit annoying if you’re really getting into something, but for quick jumps, it’s fine. The pre-session ads aren’t too intrusive. My tip would be to use it for single-player games where a pause is easy, as getting cut off mid-multiplayer could be rough.
