Revolutionizing Distributed Database Query Observation

In the realm of distributed database management systems (DBMS) like Greenplum, developers frequently encounter stalled queries where conventional tools, such as EXPLAIN, fail to provide adequate insight into the current execution state. The ambiguity surrounding the root cause, whether it’s data skew or a spill to disk, often compels professionals to restart queries arbitrarily due to the absence of live observation capabilities.

Alexey Rozhok’s Project: Enhancing Query Execution Transparency

Alexey Rozhok, a ClickHouse developer at Yandex Cloud, undertook an innovative project during his internship at Greenplum/Cloudberry in the summer of 2026. This initiative aims to deliver comprehensive visibility into the entire query execution path across the cluster, thereby significantly streamlining troubleshooting and problem resolution.

Architectural Solutions and the YAGPCC Service

A pivotal aspect of the developed solution is its ability to access processes across all cluster hosts, enabling real-time collection of essential query execution metrics. Notably, the collection of these metrics has been offloaded from the coordinator to a dedicated, specialized service named YAGPCC. This architectural decision enhances the efficiency and reliability of the monitoring system, preventing coordinator overload and ensuring more granular and timely observation of every stage of query execution within a distributed environment.
