Apple Adjusts App Store Strategy in the European Union

Apple has announced significant revisions to its App Store policies within the European Union. These changes are intended to resolve the company’s “disagreements with the Commission over business terms and alternative distribution,” according to Apple. The updated framework aims to simplify commission structures and enhance developer flexibility.

Streamlined Fees and New Developer Terms

A central component of these updates is the consolidation of business terms: every developer distributing applications in the EU will now operate under a single set of conditions. This also entails a review of existing charges. Notably, Apple is replacing its previous per-install fee with a straightforward 5% commission for applications distributed outside the official App Store.

Enhanced Support for Alternative App Marketplaces

Beyond the financial adjustments, Apple is also making it considerably easier for developers to establish and manage alternative app marketplaces. These measures are designed to foster a more flexible and competitive digital transaction environment, granting developers greater autonomy in their business models and distribution channels across the European Union.
