Do you remember when the Internet was fast? It seems like just recently everything was flying – and suddenly pages take longer to load, video buffers, Zoom calls freeze. What has changed?

Sometimes the provider is to blame. But more often, the cause is in your home, and you can fix it yourself in 20–30 minutes. Let’s take it in order.

Step 1: Measure the actual speed

Before looking for the cause, make sure that the problem exists. Intuition often deceives us.

Go tospeedtest.netor2ip.ru/speedand run the test. Compare the result with what is written in your tariff plan.

Important:Test several times at different times of the day. In the evening from 19 to 23 hours the load on the networks is maximum – a slight slowdown at this time is normal.

If the speed is significantly lower than stated, we look for the reason.

Reason 1: The router has not rebooted for a long time

The simplest and most common solution. A router is a small computer that runs continuously for months. Memory becomes full, connections freeze, and performance suffers.

Solution:Unplug the router for 30 seconds and plug it back in. Wait 2 minutes for it to load completely.

It sounds trivial – but in half the cases it completely solves the problem. Get into the habit of rebooting your router once a month.

Reason 2: Too many devices on the network

Smartphones, laptops, TV, smart speakers, children’s tablets – all of this shares one Internet channel. If your roommate is downloading a 4K movie while you are on a video call, the call will be slow.

What to do:

  • Go to the router settings (usually the address 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in the browser) and look at the list of connected devices.
  • Check if there are other people’s devices – unsecured Wi-Fi can be used by neighbors.
  • Modern routers have a functionQoS (Quality of Service)— it allows you to set priorities for specific devices or types of traffic (for example, video calls are more important than downloads).

Reason 3: Weak Wi-Fi signal

Wi-Fi signal weakens through walls, especially through concrete floors and metal structures. If the router is located at one end of the apartment, and you work at the other, the signal may be weak even with good Internet.

How to check:On your phone, look at the number of Wi-Fi bars near the router and in your workplace. The big difference is the signal is the problem.

Solutions:

  • Move the router closer to the center of the apartment and higher (not on the floor).
  • Move the router away from microwaves and other sources of interference.
  • For large apartments – buyWi-Fi repeater(signal amplifier, costs from $15) ormesh system(several access points, covers the entire area).

  • Set Windows updates to run at night.
  • Check if the torrent client is running in the background.

Reason 6: Problems on the provider side

If all the previous steps did not help, and the speed is consistently lower than advertised, the problem is with the provider. This could be an accident, an overloaded node, technical work, or simply poor quality of service.

What to do:

  • Call your provider’s support and report the problem. Ask to record the request.
  • Check forums and social networks – if the problem is widespread, there will already be complaints there.
  • If the problem is systemic and the provider does not respond, consider changing providers. Competition in the market is quite high.

Quick diagnostic checklist

✅ Measured speed on speedtest.net
✅ Rebooted the router
✅ Checked the number of devices on the network
✅ Assessed Wi-Fi signal strength
✅ Checked background downloads on the computer
✅ If necessary, contact the provider

Conclusion

Slow Internet in most cases is a solvable problem. Start by rebooting the router and measuring the speed. In 60–70% of cases this is enough. If not, move along the list above. The provider is less often at fault than it seems – more often the problem is right in your home and is solved in a few minutes.
