Cultural Perspective in Team and Organizational Diagnostics

The cultural perspective offers a profound approach to studying and understanding organizations, explaining their identity as carriers of a unique system of shared meanings, values, and beliefs. This framework significantly influences the behavior of individuals affiliated with the entity. Organizational theory has developed several explanatory paradigms that interpret organizational culture and its study in distinct ways.

Interpretive Paradigm: The Organization as Culture

One such paradigm is the Interpretive approach, derived from cultural anthropology. It proposes viewing culture not merely as a resource an organization possesses, but as a foundational metaphor. Within this paradigm, semantic constructs are fundamentally inverted: the organization does not simply have a culture — it is the culture itself. This perspective highlights the deep, intrinsic link between an organization’s essence and its cultural foundation.

The ‘Brain’ Metaphor: The Organization as a Cognitive System

Another significant metaphor, the ‘Brain,’ shifts the focus of reconnaissance to learning, viewing the organization as a complex cognitive system. Such a system is capable of analyzing information, integrating into a complex world, and being receptive to its own errors, using them for growth. While the ‘Machine’ metaphor specializes in rules and control, and the ‘Organism’ focuses on environmental survival, the ‘Brain’ interprets the organization as an intelligent, distributed, and self-learning system with high potential for self-organization and adaptation.
