Mobile Processor and Smartphone Market Analysis: H1 2026 Trends

The first half of 2026 has brought significant shifts to the global mobile processor and smartphone markets. Reports from analytical firms Counterpoint Research and Omdia indicate an overall decrease in mobile chip shipments and smartphone sales, yet some key players managed to expand their market shares.

Chip Shipments Decline and Market Share Realignments

According to Counterpoint Research, global mobile processor shipments in the first half of 2026 decreased by 15% compared to the same period last year. This downturn reflects a reduction in Android device sales, directly impacting leading chip suppliers. Major players like MediaTek and Qualcomm experienced substantial declines. MediaTek’s share of the mobile processor market fell from 37% to 32%, while Qualcomm’s dropped from 26% to 22%. In absolute terms, shipments from these companies saw a reduction of over 25%.

Conversely, several manufacturers demonstrated robust growth. Companies such as Samsung, Google, Apple, and Unisoc significantly strengthened their positions. Samsung and Google, actively developing their own chipsets, increased their market shares, highlighting a trend towards vertical integration and reduced reliance on third-party suppliers.

Smartphone Sales Plummet Amid Component Crisis

The smartphone market is also facing challenging times. Omdia analysts recorded a 6% year-on-year decline in global smartphone sales in Q2 2026, totaling 272 million units. This downward trend in shipments has been observed since late 2025. The primary causes cited are the ongoing memory chip crisis and rising component costs, with supply chain disruptions expected to persist until at least the end of 2026.

Manufacturers of budget smartphones were hit the hardest. Shipments for Xiaomi decreased by 26%, and for Oppo by 17% compared to the previous year. These companies were forced to implement price increases in certain markets and reduce their product portfolios, negatively impacting sales. It is anticipated that budget smartphone segments will experience the most significant price hikes in the near future.

Despite the overall market contraction, Apple and Samsung managed to increase their shares in the global smartphone market, underscoring their resilience during the crisis and their ability to adapt to evolving market conditions.
