Apple Introduces Device Leasing Initiative
Apple has officially unveiled its new leasing program, Apple Upgrade, designed to streamline the acquisition of the latest iPhone, Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch models. Launched today in the United States, the service operates akin to a car lease, providing users with multiple options at the conclusion of their agreement.
Program Mechanics and Flexibility
Under the Apple Upgrade program, users can choose to retain their device at the end of the subscription term, pay off its full cost early, or upgrade to a newer model upon its release. This initiative follows recent price adjustments for MacBook, iPad, and other devices, attributed to ongoing memory and storage component shortages. While current iPhone models remain unaffected, Apple CEO Tim Cook previously cautioned about an “unstable situation,” hinting at a potential price increase for the upcoming iPhone 18 series.
Subscription Pricing Details
The Apple Upgrade program offers competitive monthly rates, making premium devices more accessible. Initial monthly payments are set as follows:
- iPhone: $17.99
- Apple Watch: $11.99
- Mac: $24.99
- iPad: $11.99
Apple has partnered with Klarna for the launch of this program, underscoring its commitment to expanding financial pathways for its customer base.
I’ve been using the Apple Upgrade Program for my iPhone for about a year now, and it’s mostly been a smooth experience. Getting the new model every year without a huge upfront cost is fantastic. What doesn’t work so well is the trade-in process if your phone has even minor cosmetic damage; they can be super strict. My tip would be to invest in a really good case and screen protector from day one to avoid any issues at upgrade time. It really saves a headache.
