Apple Introduces Device Leasing to Boost Sales Amidst Price Increases

Apple is reportedly preparing to launch a new “Apple Upgrade” program, allowing consumers to lease new devices. This initiative, as reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, aims to boost sales performance, especially as component shortages drive prices higher across the industry. The program, anticipated to launch on July 28 in the U.S., will encompass most current models of iPhone, Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch.

Lease-to-Own Model Addresses Rising Hardware Costs

The introduction of a leasing program marks a significant strategic shift for Apple’s hardware business, particularly as the company has been compelled to increase prices on various products. The escalating costs of RAM and storage chips, exacerbated by supply chain disruptions and the AI boom, have led to price adjustments for iPads and MacBooks. The Apple Upgrade program is designed to function similarly to a car lease, offering users the flexibility to:

  • Upgrade to a newer device early in the lease term.
  • Retain the current device at the conclusion of the lease period.
  • Return the device when the lease expires.

Swedish fintech company Klarna Group will provide financial backing for this project, highlighting the comprehensive nature of Apple’s new offering.
