Evolution of Googlebook Keyboard Design
Googlebook laptops are integrating a familiar set of controls, directly inspired by Android smartphones from the mid-2010s. Physical navigation buttons, reminiscent of devices running Android 5.0, are now making their way onto the keyboards of these devices.
Repurposed Function Keys for Enhanced Navigation
The traditional F1, F2, and F3 function keys on Googlebook keyboards have been re-designated with new symbols and functionalities:
- The F1 key is now marked with a triangle, serving as the “Back” function.
- The F2 key features a circle icon, corresponding to the “Home” function.
- The F3 key displays a square, enabling users to switch between open applications, mirroring Android’s “Overview” or “Recents” functionality.
While some perceive the Quick Insert and Google logo keys as recent additions, these debuted on certain Chromebooks a couple of years ago. Nevertheless, the introduction of these specific Android navigation buttons represents a notable shift for the Googlebook lineup, bringing a user experience familiar to Android users directly to their laptops.
It’s fascinating to see Android’s classic navigation buttons making a comeback on Googlebook keyboards. I’m curious about the design philosophy behind this – is it primarily for user familiarity, or are there deeper ergonomic benefits for laptop use cases that mirror smartphone interaction? Also, will these new key assignments be customizable, or are they fixed? I’d love to hear others’ thoughts on how this might change muscle memory!
