Amazon Expands Satellite Connectivity Ambitions

Amazon has submitted an application to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to establish a new low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation. This move signifies a major expansion in Amazon’s satellite endeavors, aiming to deliver direct-to-device satellite service for mobile phones globally.

Project Leo Details and Deployment Timeline

The proposal outlines the deployment of 5,105 satellites as part of the new Leo constellation. This network is designed to enable mobile devices to connect directly to satellites, providing essential services such as voice, messaging, data, and emergency communications. According to the FCC filing, Amazon intends to commence the deployment of this extensive satellite network in 2028, pending regulatory approval.

Amazon plans to collaborate with existing mobile network operators to offer these direct-to-device satellite capabilities. This initiative is poised to intensify competition within the satellite internet sector, potentially challenging other major players in the industry by significantly broadening connectivity options for users worldwide.
