FTC Files Lawsuit Against Amazon Over Alleged Advertising Overcharges

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), alongside attorneys general from 22 states, has initiated a new lawsuit against Amazon. The suit claims the e-commerce giant secretly and systematically overcharged businesses for advertising placements on its platform.

Details of the FTC’s Accusations

According to the FTC’s allegations, Amazon implemented a “secret ad surcharge scheme” to inflate the cost of advertising services on its website and mobile application. In a blog post discussing the lawsuit, FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson stated that these elevated advertising prices “were largely passed on to American consumers.”

The lawsuit contends that Amazon did not disclose these additional charges, leading to increased expenses for businesses utilizing the platform’s advertising tools. This legal action highlights continued regulatory scrutiny over pricing practices and transparency within major technology companies.
