Apple Introduces Companion eSIM for Multiple iPhones
Apple is set to roll out a significant new feature designed to streamline the experience for users with multiple iPhones. Soon, individuals will be able to share a single phone number across two devices without the need to physically swap SIM cards. This innovative technology, dubbed Companion eSIM, is anticipated to launch with iOS 27, according to reports from Heise.de.
iPhone Handoff and Carrier Dependence
The Companion eSIM foundation will enable the iPhone Handoff feature, allowing users to seamlessly switch their active phone number between multiple iPhones linked to the same Apple ID. This capability was briefly highlighted on a slide during Apple’s WWDC presentation in June.
A crucial factor for the full implementation of this new functionality is support from mobile network operators. Specifically, the technology is expected to be compatible with Deutsche Telekom networks and its U.S. subsidiary, T-Mobile. However, unofficial sources suggest that the necessary server infrastructure to activate these services is not yet operational.
Consequently, while Apple is advancing this convenient option, its widespread availability to end-users will be contingent upon the readiness and infrastructural backing provided by their respective mobile carriers.
