China’s Semiconductor Ambitions: A Long Road to EUV Lithography

Leading analytical firms and equipment manufacturers concur that China significantly lags behind global leaders in mastering EUV lithography technology. Experts project that Chinese semiconductor manufacturers will require at least 15 years to independently implement these advanced methodologies.

The EUV Technology Gap

Since 2019, the Dutch company ASML, a monopolist in EUV lithography equipment production, has ceased supplying its scanners to China. This restriction has effectively deprived the Chinese industry of the ability to mass-produce advanced chips at 7nm and more sophisticated process nodes at reasonable costs. UBS analysts are confident that Chinese manufacturers will not be able to independently master EUV technologies before the end of the next decade.

German Experts Weigh In

The German optical component manufacturer Zeiss Group, a crucial supplier to ASML, also confirms China’s substantial delay. According to their assessments, Chinese developers of semiconductor equipment will need approximately 15 years to achieve parity in EUV lithography. This underscores the scale of the challenge facing the Chinese industry in its pursuit of import substitution and technological independence.
