You use your smartphone every day – but do you really know it? Manufacturers put dozens of useful functions into phones that are not talked about in commercials. Some are hidden in the depths of the settings, others are simply not obvious during normal use.
We have selected5 functions, which really change the usability of the phone – and which you have in your pocket right now.
1. Screen magnifier – a built-in tool for people with any vision
The smartphone has a real digital magnifying glass that magnifies any object in front of the camera. This is not just a camera zoom – it is a separate tool with backlighting, contrast adjustment and frame freezing.
Where to find:
- iPhone:Settings → Accessibility → Magnifier. After activation, it appears in the control center.
- Android:On most devices – Settings → Accessibility → Magnifier (or “Zoom”).
Why do you need:Read the fine print on the medicine packaging, see the number in the dark, look at the details in the instructions. Much more convenient than opening the camera and taking a photo.
2. Screen Recording – No Third Party Apps
Most users don’t know that their smartphones already have built-in screen recording. No additional apps, no ads or watermarks.
Where to find:
- iPhone (iOS 11+):Add “Screen Recording” to Control Center (Settings → Control Center). Long press starts recording with microphone sound.
- Android (10+):Usually in the quick settings curtain there is a “Screen Recording” icon. Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO definitely have it.
Why do you need:Remove instructions for elderly parents, fix a bug in the application, record a game moment, save a video from stories that will disappear after 24 hours.
3. One-handed mode – for large screens
Modern smartphones are huge. Reaching the top corner of the screen with one hand can be physically inconvenient – especially in transport. For this purpose, a one-handed mode was invented, which compresses the interface to the bottom of the screen.
Where to find:
- iPhone:Settings → Accessibility → Touch → Reachability. Activated by swiping down the bottom of the screen.
- Samsung:Settings → Additional features → One-handed mode.
- Android (others):Look under “Accessibility” or “Gestures”.
Why do you need:Using the phone in a crowded vehicle with one hand holding the handrail.
4. Text under the cursor: precise carriage control
Have you ever tried to place the cursor in the right place in the text and missed several times in a row? There is a way to control the cursor position accurately and without nerves.
How it works:
- iPhone:Press and hold the space bar on your keyboard and the entire set of keys will turn into a “trackpad.” Move your finger to move the cursor.
- Android (Gboard):Press and hold Spacebar – similar to trackpad mode. You can also click on the navigation arrows in the additional keyboard panel.
Why do you need:Edit text without unnecessary taps, accurately highlight words and sentences, work with long messages.
5. Document scanner directly in camera or notes
Taking photographs of documents “as is” is wrong. The result is a crooked photo with shadows and perspective distortions. The phone already has a built-in scanner that automatically straightens the document, removes shadows and saves it as PDF.
Where to find:
- iPhone:Open the Notes app → Create a new note → Camera icon → Scan Documents. Also works through the Files application.
- Google Drive (Android and iPhone):“+” button → Scan. Saves directly to the cloud.
- Samsung:The Camera app has a Document mode.
Why do you need:Scan contracts, receipts, recipes, book pages. The result is a clear PDF, no worse than an office scanner.
Bonus: Hidden Developer Menu on Android
If you want to fine-tune the system, Android has a hidden “Developer Options” section. To open it, go to Settings → About phone → Build number and tap on it7 times in a row. In the developer menu, you can speed up interface animations, which will make the phone feel much faster.
Conclusion
A smartphone is a tool that most of us only half use. Magnifier, screen recording, one-handed mode, precise cursor and built-in scanner – it’s all already in your pocket. Spend 10 minutes learning these features and your phone will become noticeably easier to use on a daily basis.
