Apple Dispels Rumors of Device Limitations for Upgrade Program Users
Apple has officially addressed recent media speculation regarding the implementation of a “restricted mode” for devices leased through its Apple Upgrade Program in the event of missed payments. The company confirmed that no functionality limitations will be imposed on devices for users who default on their payments.
No Functional Restrictions on Devices
In an emailed statement to The Verge, Apple spokesperson Brian Bumbery clarified the company’s stance: “There will be no restricted mode and/or there will be no limitations put on device functionality due to missed payments or default.” This definitive statement aims to alleviate user concerns and provide clarity on the terms of device usage under the lease program.
Prior reports had suggested that Apple might introduce measures to limit the capabilities of iPhones if users failed to make timely lease payments. However, Apple’s official confirmation puts an end to these speculations, assuring that the full functionality of the device will remain accessible regardless of payment status within the Upgrade Program.
While it’s reassuring that Apple won’t implement a ‘restricted mode’ for missed payments, it does make one wonder about their recovery strategy for defaults. Does this mean they’ll simply pursue traditional debt collection, which can be costly and time-consuming? It seems like a significant risk for Apple to bear, potentially impacting the program’s long-term viability or leading to higher costs for all participants down the line.
